Brunello Cucinelli is one of the few luxury houses where the founder's philosophy is genuinely embedded in the product. History
Brunello Cucinelli founded the company in 1978 in Perugia, initially producing dyed cashmere sweaters in unconventional colours. The breakthrough came in 1985 when Cucinelli purchased Solomeo's abandoned hilltop village and began the restoration that would define the maison's identity. The Solomeo School of Crafts opened in 2013 to train young artisans in tailoring, knitwear, and other endangered crafts. The company went public on Borsa Italiana in 2012 and now generates over €1 billion in annual revenue while maintaining family control.
Craft Philosophy
Cucinelli's manufacturing philosophy centres on what the founder calls 'humanistic capitalism' - production must respect the dignity of the worker and the integrity of the place. All knitwear is hand-finished in Solomeo or surrounding Umbrian workshops. Cashmere is sourced from Mongolian herders through long-term partnerships. The Solomeo School trains the next generation of artisans in techniques that would otherwise disappear. The result is clothing made on a slower production cycle than industrial luxury, with construction details - hand-attached buttons, hand-rolled hems, hand-finished seams - visible to anyone who knows what to look for.
