    Editorial Standards

    Our Curation Methodology

Every item featured on Desirables is evaluated against a transparent, repeatable framework. This page explains exactly how we decide what earns a place in our editorial coverage - and what doesn't.

    Why a Methodology Matters

The luxury and lifestyle space is saturated with content that conflates price with quality, paid placement with editorial endorsement, and opinion with expertise. Desirables exists to do the opposite: to apply a rigorous, disclosed framework so readers can trust that what we recommend has been measured, not marketed.

Our methodology isn't a marketing exercise. It's the operational system we use every day to decide which categories to expand, which collections to feature, and which products earn an editorial slot.

    The Six Pillars of Evaluation

    Craftsmanship

Materials, construction, and finishing must meet or exceed category benchmarks. We assess stitching density, hardware quality, joinery, movement complexity, and finishing techniques relevant to each product type.

    Design Integrity

Form follows function - without sacrificing beauty. Items must demonstrate intentional design language, proportional balance, and a coherent point of view rather than trend-chasing or imitation.

    Brand Heritage

Provenance matters. We evaluate the brand's history, its commitment to its craft, designer continuity, and whether the maker has earned the right to its price point through consistent quality.

    Cultural Relevance

Does the item participate in a meaningful conversation? We weigh influence on its category, critical reception, collector demand, and longevity beyond a single season.

    Longevity

True luxury outlasts trends. We favor items engineered or designed to age well - through materials that develop patina, timeless silhouettes, or service-and-repair ecosystems that extend useful life.

    Value for Category

Price must be defensible relative to peers. A €30,000 watch and a €300 candle are evaluated against their own benchmarks. We ask: at this price, against this competition, does this item earn its place?

Our Review Process, Step by Step

    1. 1. Discovery

Items enter our pipeline through editor research, reader nominations, industry reports, auction results, and brand submissions. Submission does not guarantee consideration.

    2. 2. Initial Screening

A junior editor scores the item against our six pillars on a 1-5 scale. Items scoring below 3.5 average are deprioritized.

    3. 3. Deep Research

Approved items move to a dedicated writer who interviews experts, consults primary sources (brand archives, auction records, trade publications), and where possible examines the item in person.

    4. 4. Senior Editor Review

Drafts are reviewed by a senior editor for accuracy, balance, and voice. Claims of fact must be sourced. Subjective judgments must be grounded in the framework.

    5. 5. Publication & Disclosure

Affiliate relationships are disclosed at the page and link level. See our Affiliate Disclosure for full details.

    6. 6. Ongoing Maintenance

Coverage is reviewed on a rolling schedule - quarterly for buying guides, semi-annually for trend pieces, and ad hoc when material facts change.

    What We Won't Do

    • • Accept payment for editorial placement or favorable rankings.
    • • Publish content written or substantially edited by a brand without clear "Sponsored" labeling.
    • • Recommend an item we wouldn't recommend to a friend at the same budget.
    • • Hide affiliate relationships or other commercial interests.
    • • Inflate ratings to please a partner or chase a commission.
