Hermès is the rare luxury maison whose product still justifies its mythology. The house manufactures leather goods, silk, ready-to-wear, fragrance, and tableware across more than 50 ateliers - all majority-controlled by the Hermès family, all subject to the same artisanal standards established in the 19th century. The maison's refusal to industrialise its core leather production, combined with restricted allocation of flagship pieces, has produced a category of luxury good that consistently appreciates rather than depreciates on the secondary market.
History
Thierry Hermès opened a harness workshop in Paris's Grands Boulevards in 1837, supplying European nobility. His grandson Émile-Maurice Hermès expanded the maison into luggage and leather goods in the early 20th century, introducing the zipper to France in 1922 and establishing the Saint-Honoré flagship in 1880. The maison introduced the Kelly bag (originally Sac à dépêches) in 1935 and the Birkin in 1984. Hermès remains controlled by descendants of the founder.
Craft Philosophy
Hermès maintains that any object worth making is worth making by a single artisan from start to finish. Each Birkin and Kelly is hand-stitched by one craftsman over 18-25 hours, using the saddle-stitch technique inherited from the original harness workshop. Edges are hand-painted in multiple coats, hardware is solid metal, and linings are chevre leather. The maison operates 12 leather ateliers across France and refuses to outsource production.

Why Hermès Matters
Hermès is the only major luxury house that has not compromised manufacturing standards in pursuit of growth. While competitors have moved to industrial production and conglomerate ownership, Hermès remains family-controlled and atelier-driven. The result is a luxury good whose price is justifiable on a per-hour-of-craftsmanship basis - a claim no other major maison can credibly make.
