Audemars Piguet occupies a unique position in luxury watchmaking: independent, family-controlled, and singularly responsible for the integrated-bracelet sport-luxury category that defines modern collector demand. The maison's 1972 introduction of the Royal Oak - a stainless-steel sport watch priced higher than gold dress watches of the era - was widely considered industry suicide at the time. History
Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded the maison in 1875 in Le Brassus, in the Vallée de Joux. The founders' families have controlled the company continuously since - making it the only major Swiss manufacture with unbroken family ownership. AP introduced the world's first minute repeater wristwatch in 1892, the first jumping-hour wristwatch in 1921, and the Royal Oak in 1972 (designed overnight by Gérald Genta). The maison remains based in Le Brassus and is led by Jasmine Audemars and CEO François-Henry Bennahmias.
Craft Philosophy
Audemars Piguet's manufacturing approach centres on the watchmaker as artist. The maison maintains low production volumes (approximately 50,000 watches per year), employs traditional finishing techniques across all calibres, and operates the only major haute horlogerie museum dedicated to a single brand. The Royal Oak's tapisserie dial is hand-guilloché, the white-gold case screws are individually hand-aligned, and the brushed-and-polished bracelet finishing requires three weeks of artisan work per piece.
