A maki-e Nakaya retails for $3,000-$15,000 and is built to the standards of a watch movement. The category benefits from low storage requirements and meaningful hand-craft economics.

Niche fragrance - beyond the designer counter

Independent perfumery - Frédéric Malle, Ormonde Jayne, Maison Francis Kurkdjian's high concentrations, BORN TO STAND OUT, Le Labo's archival pieces - has matured into a serious collecting category. Limited extrait runs from these houses appreciate on secondary markets in ways unimaginable a decade ago. The category sits at the intersection of craft, scarcity, and personal use.

Vintage hi-fi - the analogue revival

Tube amplification (McIntosh MC275, Audio Research, Manley Labs), vintage turntables (Garrard 301, Thorens TD-124, Linn Sondek LP12 with Cirkus upgrade), and high-end vintage speakers (JBL Hartsfield, Tannoy Westminster, Quad ESL-57) have re-entered serious collecting. The category appeals to collectors who want objects that produce experience rather than appreciate quietly in safes.

Hand-built bicycles - the unhyped craft

Frames from Pegoretti (vintage), Mariposa, Speedvagen, Chapman Cycles, and Vanilla Workshop trade in the $5,000-$25,000 range and are built one at a time by named makers. The category remains genuinely under-marketed - Pegoretti collectors number perhaps 1,500 worldwide - and the objects combine functional use with collectible craft.

Japanese craft - knives, ceramics, joinery

Hand-forged Japanese kitchen knives (Shigefusa, Kato, Konosuke), wood-fired ceramics from named potters (Shoji Hamada, contemporary Bizen and Shigaraki), and small-batch joinery objects have become collected categories outside Japan. The work meets every standard of haute craft and trades at a fraction of equivalent European prices.

Outlook

Each of these categories will see accelerated professionalisation over the next 24-36 months. We expect dedicated dealers and online auction infrastructure to emerge for fountain pens, niche fragrance, and vintage hi-fi in particular - replicating the trajectory watches followed in the 2010s.
