Fine Wine
Burgundy at the top, Bordeaux as the baseline, and the only literally liquid collectible.
History
The modern fine wine investment market emerged through the 1990s and 2000s around Bordeaux en primeur and the establishment of Liv-ex as a transparent secondary platform.
Through the 2010s the market broadened decisively into top Burgundy, cult California, Champagne, and Tuscany.
Buying Guide
- Provenance - temperature, storage, transit - is everything; buy from sources you can verify.
- In-bond storage at recognised facilities (Octavian, LCB) supports both value and resale.
- Concentrate in top Burgundy domaines, first-growth Bordeaux, and a narrow band of Champagne and Tuscany.
Market Trends
- Liv-ex indices stabilized in early 2026 after the corrections of 2023 and 2024.
- Top Burgundy continues to outperform broader indices; cult California and Champagne supply secondary growth.
Preservation
- Constant 12-14°C, 70% humidity, dark and still - professional storage is the only credible option for serious holdings.
- Avoid moving wine more than necessary; document every transit and condition check.
Investment Considerations
- Top Burgundy and first-growth Bordeaux with verified provenance remain credible long-term holdings.
- Wine is one of the few literally consumable collectible classes - a discipline issue, not a portfolio issue.
