    History

Founded in 1966 in the leather-working town of Vicenza, Bottega Veneta developed the intrecciato woven leather technique to compensate for early sewing machines too light to stitch heavy leather, then turned that constraint into a signature.

Tomas Maier (2001-2018), Daniel Lee (2018-2021), and Matthieu Blazy (2021-2025) led successive creative reinventions that kept the house culturally relevant without losing the weaving discipline.

Acquired by the Gucci Group in 2001 and now part of Kering, the brand has retained its Vicenza atelier and craft school, La Scuola dei Maestri Pellettieri.

    Craftsmanship

    • Intrecciato weaving is done by hand from leather strips cut to consistent width; assembly times for a single bag can run into days.
    • The atelier runs its own training school to keep weaving knowledge alive in a region where the artisan pool is shrinking.
    • Hardware is kept deliberately minimal; logos are largely absent, with the weave itself functioning as the brand mark.

    House Signatures

    • Intrecciato woven leather, knot clasp, soft constructionless silhouettes.
    • Distinctive color palette anchored by Parakeet, Fondant, and the original house chocolate brown.
    • 'When your own initials are enough' - the long-running anti-logo positioning.

    Ownership

    • Owned by Kering SA, the French luxury group whose portfolio includes Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga.
    • Group ownership gives Bottega Veneta access to global retail and supply chain while preserving its Vicenza craft base.

    Cultural Impact

    • The brand's logo-light, weave-first approach helped define the 2010s shift toward 'quiet luxury' before the term became a marketing label.
    • Bottega's exit from social media under Daniel Lee in 2021 became a widely-discussed counter-move in luxury communications.

    Collectibility

    • Early Tomas Maier-era Veneta hobos in archival colors are sought by collectors who prize the soft-construction era.
    • Limited Daniel Lee-era pieces in Parakeet and Fondant carry premiums where condition is strong.
    • Knot clutches in unusual finishes and minaudière sizes appear regularly in design-focused handbag auctions.

    Buying Notes

    • Intrecciato lambskin is supple but vulnerable to scuffs; nappa and palmellato finishes wear harder for daily use.
    • Buy from boutiques or bottegaveneta.com to ensure authenticity and access to the brand's lifetime repair program.
    • Rotate use and rest soft bags with stuffing to maintain the slouchy silhouette without permanent creasing.
