Definition

Provenance is the traceable record connecting an object to its source and subsequent history. Its evidential value depends on the quality and continuity of documentation. Provenance can support attribution and context but should not be confused with a guarantee of authenticity by itself.

Origin

From the French provenir, to come from. The term is established in art history, museums, archaeology, archives, and collecting.

Usage in luxury

Invoices, archival extracts, service papers, exhibition histories, and previous ownership records can help establish an object's story. Gaps or extraordinary claims require careful verification.
